"...it's not everyday that people get to meet Jazz legend(s) or the Miami Saxophone Quartet. The special guests were my favorite part. I also got to meet new people and enjoy everything with the friends I made. I really like everything about the UM camp..."

Classical Instrument Camp

Camp Description
Not just an orchestra program, campers at the Young Musicians’ Music Camp will have the opportunity to broaden their experiences in classical music. All students in the Intermediate, Pre-College, and Honors Programs will be placed in Chamber Music Groups. These small groups made of up 2 –6 musicians will be coached daily by our faculty and will perform in one of the final concerts.

All student in the classical music camp will also perform in a Large Ensemble – Orchestra for Elementary and Intermediate groups and instrument specific ensembles such as Wind Ensemble and String Ensemble for the Pre-College/Honors Program. Students in the Elementary Orchestra will receive extra coaching from our staff to make sure they can perform their parts!

Music Theory
Music Theory is part of the curriculum for all levels and a pre-test is given at the beginning of camp for placement purposes. Not a lecture class with worksheets, the Young Musicians’ Camp theory classes incorporate playing experiences for a hands on music theory class. Older students who are inexperienced music readers will be enrolled in our Boot Camp Music Theory ( THIS is the summer to learn how to read!!!) and advanced students will be placed in Form & Analysis – a college level course. Younger students will have fun learning music theory by playing games.

Students in the Intermediate/Pre-College/Honors Programs will also study Perfomance Styles. Using their instruments, they will learn the difference in how to play Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, and Contemporary music. Classical music campers will also learn about how to prepare for auditions. This class will also break up into instrument specific groups to discuss technique and students in the Pre-College/Honors program will have the opportunity to play a solo in a master class setting.

Elementary students will improve their music skills in the enrichment class where they can choose from Stomp – (a creative rhythm class), Musical Theatre (singing/dancing Broadway show tunes), Movement, or Improvisation (using their instrument in a creative way). Intermediate level classical music campers will enjoy our classical music reading/jam sessions They can also opt to take a 5th class and learn how they can play their instruments in a Jazz/Rock Combo (no experience required!), how to Compose music, or play in a second chamber music group. The Pre-College daily schedule ends at 5:00 pm and incorporates the 5th class where students can study Composition, Conducting, or Hip-Hop Strings. The Honors Chamber Music students will be coached by our faculty in small group settings. They also will have sessions in analysis of their pieces, performance styles, and performing and audition techniques.
