With a full schedule filled with intensive jazz classes, at the end of the session you will leave with a deeper understanding of all aspects of Jazz. On the first day of camp, our faculty will conduct informal auditions and place you in a small group with campers at your skill level. You will also have a techniques class, and a class in Jazz Theory and Improv. Jazz Vocalists will follow a curriculum that concentrates on jazz voice! And... we invite highly advanced students to audition for our Honors Jazz Ensemble!
Our entire jazz faculty will expect you to practice seriously at camp - and the result will be a big step forward towards becoming a pro!
REQUIREMENTS
- Entering grades 9-12 in the fall. (qualified younger students may enroll with a teacher recommendation)
- Recommended 3 years experience on your instrument.
- Pianists should have experience reading chord symbols.
- All applicants who meet the above requirements may enroll in the Camp.*
- All bass, guitar, and wind players must bring their own instrument to Camp. Bass players and guitarists should also bring their amps, cable, and a cart. Pick-ups and amps for string players are highly suggested, vocalists should bring their own mic and XLR cable. Dorm participants may rent an amp from the camp.
- *There is limited enrollment for bass, drums, and piano.

Honors Jazz Ensemble This special class is open by audition to jazz players who are more advanced than their age and grade level. You will be coached by our Honors Faculty - made up of UM Frost School of Music professors, selected Frost Graduate students, and artists who love to work with exceptional young musicians. The Honors Jazz Ensemble will perform in our Final Concert where each musician will receive a certificate of participation, signed by your Honors professors. |
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR AUDITION FOR THE HONORS ENSEMBLE
- A recommendation from your music teacher.
- Every applicant must submit an audition postmarked by MAY 1.
- An audition demo is required: 10-minute maximum. All auditions must be submitted as a high-quality video file or a YouTube link. Send your demos to: youngmusicianscamp@gmail.com
- Winds, Piano, Guitar, and Voice: submit the following 2 selections:
- A ballad: no longer than 1 chorus.
- Improvisation: play (or sing) the head and solo on a jazz standard. This may be submitted with either a live group or with a jazz play-along.
- Bass: Play the melody to a blues selection, improvise for 1 chorus and demonstrate 2 choruses of a walking bass line.
- Drums: Play time in the following styles: Slow Swing (mm= 100/quarter note) and fast swing (mm=200/quarter note). If possible, record this with a bass player or combo. Also include a short excerpt performing with a combo to demonstrate small group playing, including trading 4's.
- Campers applying for the Honors Program will be notified by MAY 15
NOTE: All bass, guitar, and wind players must bring their own instrument to Camp. (Bass players and guitarists should also bring their amps. All vocalists should bring a mic and XLR cable.)

PRIVATE LESSONS
PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons given by our camp staff may be scheduled after regular dismissal. The lessons are one hour long and all of the instructors are part of our camp faculty. The classes are held daily, except for the last day of the session. Once your camper has attended all the daily classes and met the faculty, email the camp the following information: name of professor your child would like a lesson with and on what instrument. Send to: youngmusicianscamp@gmail.com and we will tell you the days the professor is available for lessons. The camp cannot re-schedule a missed private lesson.

HOW TO APPLY
Please follow these steps to Register:
Click on the "Register Here" Link for the Track that applies to you below. The Link will take you to the Session Selection Page and the Cart for your Program. There is no need to filter or search for your Program on the Session Selection Page as long as you used the correct "Register Here" Link for your specific Program. Make sure you know the e-mail address of your music teacher. Also, please decide if you want to add an optional class and/or a private lesson for an additional fee.
On the Session Selection Page, Click on the "ADD TO CART" Link for your Program. Make sure the Program Name and Track are correct. Your Program will automatically move into "YOUR SHOPPING CART". Click on the CONTINUE Link in the Shopping Cart, which will take you to the Registration Information Page where you can begin the registration process.
Complete the following information to Register.
- Section 1: Enter Your Email Address and Click "NEXT".
- Section 2: Enter Participants & Options. Complete the required Participant Information. "Session Options" for your program will be pre-selected. Additional classes offered appear as "Optional Classes" and may be selected by checking the appropriate Box or Boxes. Click CONTINUE.
- Section 3: Please complete the Registration Forms, including the Waivers and Agreements, and sign your Digital Signature. Click "CONTINUE TO CART".
Review Cart & Check out. Review the accuracy of the "ORDER DETAILS". If you have a Coupon Code, enter it now.
Go to the "CHECK OUT" Section and select either "PAY IN FULL" or "Pay $0.00 now, and then Pay Balance manually".
Click COMPLETE and you will receive a Confirmation E-mail with the details of your Order.
You can login to your Online account at any time to verify your registration and pay your balance. A $200 deposit is required to reserve your child's place and an additional $200 to reserve the Dormitory. This includes your $40 ($75 after April 1) non-refundable Registration Fee. Deposits are due within 10 days of registration. There will be NO refunds issued except for a documented medical emergency. Full payment is due 1 month prior to the start of each session.
You will receive an e-mail confirmation when your payment has been processed.
