“...it's not everyday that people get to meet Jazz legend(s) or the Miami Saxophone Quartet. The special guests were my favorite part. I also got to meet new people and enjoy everything with the friends I made. I really like everything about the UM camp...”

Honors Program

Program Description
This Program offers talented and serious young musicians the opportunity to interact with exceptional faculty and guest artists. With grants from Friends of the Young Musicians' Camp, Citizens Interested in the Arts, the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs, and The State of Florida Division of Cultural Arts, this Program seeks to bring together students from diverse cultural and financial backgrounds to provide them with a college-level experience.

The Honors Program is offered in the areas of Musical Theater, Classical Chamber Music, and Jazz. Enrollment is limited to 10 participants for each category. (with the exception of the Jazz Program, which has a limit of 15). Admission is by audition and teacher recommendation – see requirements for Pre-College Program. The Campers will follow the same curriculum as the Pre-College Program, with additional intensive courses taught by our guest artist faculty:

Musical Theatre: The Honors Workshop will be held from 3:30 – 5:30 during the week and from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm on Sat. and Sunday. It will be taught by guest artist faculty, Jane Tamarkin (session a only) and Julian Stein, assisted by camp faculty, Felicia Kurtz. The class will explore the art of musical theatre performance with concentration on acting technique. Jane Tamarkin has extensive experience directing professional and children’s theatre companies in the Northeast, as well as acting in Off-Broadway and Summer Stock theater. ( see faculty bio). Julian Stein is best known as the musical director/arranger of the original productions of the “Fantasticks” and the original Broadway revival of “Anything Goes.” This class is limited to 10 high school age participants. Additional Workshops for middle school participants and an evening course ( 7:00 – 9:00 pm daily) will be available, based on sufficient enrollment. These workshops will conclude with a performance.

Classical Chamber Music: The Honors Workshop will be held from 2:30 – 4:30 during the week, with additional rehearsals scheduled as needed. Under the direction of Dr. Paul Posnak, Professor of Chamber Music and Accompanying at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, with Rafael Pedron, Professor of Classical Guitar, and other instrumental faculty, the program is geared towards serious pianists and instrumentalists (including classical guitar). Deadline for application is April 15. A live audition is recommended, however, if not feasible, a dvd or cd or two pieces of contrasting style is required. The selected participants will receive the music to be studied in advance and are expected to arrive at the workshop fully prepared. This workshop will conclude with a performance.

Jazz: The Honors Workshop will be held from 3:30 – 5:30 during the week, with additional weekend rehearsals scheduled as needed. Taught by guest artist faculty, Ira Sullivan, with pianist Brian Murphy, vocalist Lisanne Lyons and other guest artists, students will have daily, intensive sessions with these professionals. This workshop will conclude with a performance.

- Note: Due to limited enrollment, early application to this Program is recommended. These Workshops are open to qualified students who are not enrolled fulltime in the YM Camp. (A registration fee of $ 100. is required.) Tuition is $ 400 per session.
