Program Description
The Pre-College Program offers talented and serious young musicians the opportunity to interact with exceptional faculty and guest artists. The Program seeks to bring together students from diverse cultural and financial backgrounds to provide them with a college-level experience. The Program is open to all advanced instrumentalists and vocalists. There are five different areas of concentration: Vocal, Jazz, Classical Instrumental, Piano, and Rock. Many of the 5 daily classes are held in a small group setting. The camp day for this program ends at 5:00 pm and students are expected to practice their instrument and complete other class assignments in the evening. Each session concludes with a final concert. Students attending multiple sessions will not repeat the same material learned in previous sessions.
Requirements
Teacher recommendation, performance level Grade 5 or above. All campers will be required to attend a placement audition and theory test before their camp session begins For Session A this will take place from noon – 4:00 pm on Sunday, June 20. For Session B, placement auditions will be held on the 1st day of camp. Be prepared at the audition with the following:
Vocal: 2 contrasting pieces ( bring taped accompaniment or sheet music.)
Jazz: 2 contrasting standard tunes by any of the following composers – Duke Ellington, Horace Silver, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, or Antonio Carlos Jobim. The student should be able to perform the melody( with the exception of drummers) and to improvise.
Classical Instrumental & Piano: 2 pieces from 2 different periods in music history. Major and Minor scales, 2 octaves ( pianists should also be able to play 2 octave arpeggios and basic cadences I IV I V I in all major keys)
Rock: Guitar Students should know basic chords by the nut
E, A, D G C, B, F, maj ,7th, and minor inversions.
Basic Bar Chords on the Low E and A strings with maj, min. dom.7th and min.7th inversions Students should be able to recognize and name single notes sharps and flats on the low and high E strings from 0 fret to 12th fret.
(Auditions that can show knowledge of single notes on all 6 strings will be a plus)
At least 2 -4 scales 2 octaves each. In order of preference: Pentatonic, Major, Minor and Blues Pentatonic.
Students should be able to perform several classic rock songs. Rhythm and solo.
Examples are Eric Clapton, Santana, Ac, Dc, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen.
For Advanced instrumental guitarists Joe Stariani, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Vai
Bassist: Would be required to perform the same songs as the guitarists
Bassists should be able to recognize and name notes from fret 0 to 12 on the low e-string, and perform the pentatonic and major scales 1octave any key.
Right hand technique should include alternating first and second fingers, using a pick or slap funk technique.
Drums:
Must be able to perform the chosen classic rock songs.
Drummers must be able to perform steady time with no fills at multiple tempos
Drummers should be able to play in various time signatures; 4/4, 3/4, or 6/8.
Must also perform a single stroke roll, or double stroke roll and paradiddle on the snare.
Vocals:
Vocalist should have some ability on keys, gtr, bass, or drums and perform the chosen songs.
Keyboards must be able to perform 2 classic rock songs.
Must perform any major or minor scales two octaves using both hands simultaneously.
Must be able to play major, minor, minor 7, or dominant 7 chords in all keys using any inversion.
Must read read chord symbols.

- Level 1 - theory basics including not recognition, rhythm sightreading, ear training, major & minor scales
- Level 2 - rhythm sightreading, ear training, chord construction and harmonic analysis
- Level 3 - separate classes in Jazz Theory, Rock Theory, and Classical Theory
