ROCK CAMP

CAMP DESCRIPTION

The Rock Program at the Young Musicians' Music Camp is open to students ages 9-18 who fulfill the requirements below.

LEVELS:
There are 4 levels.*

Intermediate A - Guitarists, Bassists, Drummers, Pianists, and Vocalists who will be entering grades 4, 5, and 6 in the fall and who have had a minimum of 2 full years of experience on their instrument. If they are playing in a school band, they should be at music grade level 1.5 - 2.5. Students should be good music readers. Students do not need any prior rock experience to participate in this camp, however they must be experienced on their instrument. Beginners are not eligible for this level.

Intermediate B - Guitarists, Bassists, Drummers, Pianists, and Vocalists who will be entering grades 7, 8, and 9 in the fall and who have had a minimum of 3 full years of experience on their instrument. If they are playing in a school band, they should be at music grade level 2.5 - 4. Students should be fluent music readers. Previous participation in a rock group is suggested, but not required for this level.

Pre-College - Instrumentalists or vocalists who will be entering grades 10, 11, and 12 in the fall and who have had a minimum of 4 full years of experience on their instrument. If they are playing in a school ensemble, they should be at music grade level 4.5 or above. Previous rock experience is required, and campers should be at an advanced level of ability.

* Please note that if a camper does not fit into the levels as described above, a letter from his/her music teacher may be necessary. Please contact the camp director for details.


CURRICULUM:

All campers will participate in 3 core classes, plus 1 elective. A 5th class, which meets from 4:00 - 5:00, Jazz/Pop Studio Group, (open to all instrumentalists) can be taken for an additional fee The core classes are:

Ensemble - This is the class that performs in the final concerts.

Workshop - This class covers the following subjects: music theory and ear training, rock history and style, how to prepare for auditions, and sight reading.

Forum - This class is instrument specific and covers technique, practice and performance strategies. Students will have the opportunity to perform a prepared solo in a master class setting.

SELECTED COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

Intermediate B:

Workshop Class - All pianists, bassists, and drummers will be enrolled in the Rhythm Section Workshop, Vocalists will be placed in Vocal Workshop, and Guitarists will take our NEW Guitar Fingerboard course.

Blues Ensemble - This is an exciting performance ensemble that offers the camper a taste of traditional and contemporary blues styles. Focus is on blues rhythms and soloing techniques along with the function of each musician in a blues band. For all instruments.

Jazz Vocal - This is for vocalists, no previous jazz experience is necessary!

Rock String Ensemble - The Rock String Ensemble will teach you how to make your violin sound like an electric guitar! Ever wish you could play the Star-Spangled Banner just like Jimi Hendrix? This class can teach you! The ensemble will perform string arrangements of well-known rock standards. Students will examine the three basic components that make up a great rock song: rhythm, riff and melody. The course will also teach the stylistic techniques that define the rock sound and learn what makes a song a "classic." In addition, the class will transcribe famous rock guitar solos and build on improvisation. All students enrolled in the class will get the chance to play and perform on an electric violin.

Songwriting & Composition - New this summer for Intermediates! Campers work in small groups to compose and perform their own song. No previous experience is necessary!

Chamber Music - Open to strings,winds, and pianists. Campers must be fluent music readers. Learn the dynamics of playing classical music written for small groups 2-5 musicians)!

Intro to Jazz/Rock Piano - Classical pianists who want to learn something new should try this fun class!

Stomp - Develop your rhythm skills in a fun and creative way!

Pre-College Electives:

Music Biz - is a class that requires students to bring a laptop computer to class each day. This class is designed to expose the young modern day musician to tools and software on the computer used to record and arrange solo songs, record their band live or in the studio, and promote their music on the web. The class also includes some overview on publishing, marketing, and networking.

Music Theory Bootcamp - is a "crash-course" in all basic music theory concepts.

Songwriting - campers work in small groups to write songs in contemporary pop style.

Composition - campers study the basics of composition by composing their own piece.

5th Class Electives: for Intermediate and Pre-College campers

Musical Theater - Always a camper favorite! Students participate in a mini-production of a musical complete with ensemble numbers, solos, basic costuming and choreography. They study character development, improvisation and staging along with various acting exercises. Students will have fun and form life-long bonds as they work together at this intensive pace to create their scenes.

Jazz/Pop Studio Group - New this summer! Open to all instrumentalists! Join this large studio orchestra/band and play music out of the box!

All Rock Camp students have the opportunity to participate in our rock jam sessions, held after lunch!
