"...it's not everyday that people get to meet Jazz legend(s) or the Miami Saxophone Quartet. The special guests were my favorite part. I also got to meet new people and enjoy everything with the friends I made. I really like everything about the UM camp..."

SELECTED COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

Intermediate A & B Electives:

Blues Ensemble - This is an exciting performance ensemble that offers the camper a taste of traditional and contemporary blues styles. Focus is on blues rhythms and soloing techniques along with the function of each musician in a blues band. For all instruments - no blues experience necessary!

Jazz Vocal - This is for vocalists, no previous jazz experience is necessary!

Rock String Ensemble - The Rock String Ensemble will teach you how to make your violin sound like an electric guitar! Ever wish you could play the Star-Spangled Banner just like Jimi Hendrix? This class can teach you! The ensemble will perform string arrangements of well-known rock standards. Students will examine the three basic components that make up a great rock song: rhythm, riff and melody. The course will also teach the stylistic techniques that define the rock sound and learn what makes a song a "classic." In addition, the class will transcribe famous rock guitar solos and build on improvisation. All students enrolled in the class will get the chance to play and perform on an electric violin.

Songwriting & Composition - New this summer for Intermediates! Campers work in small groups to compose and perform their own song. No previous experience is necessary!

Chamber Music - Open to strings, winds, and pianists. Campers must be fluent music readers. Learn the dynamics of playing classical music written for small groups (2-5 musicians)!

Intro to Jazz/Rock Piano - Classical pianists who want to learn something new should try this fun class!

Stomp - Develop your rhythm skills in a fun and creative way!

Pre-College Electives:

Music Biz - is a class that requires students to bring a laptop computer to class each day. This class is designed to expose the young modern day musician to tools and software on the computer used to record and arrange solo songs, record their band live or in the studio, and promote their music on the web. The class also includes some overview on publishing, marketing, and networking.

Music Theory Bootcamp - is a "crash-course" in all basic music theory concepts.

Songwriting - campers work in small groups to write songs in contemporary pop style

Composition - campers study the basics of composition by composing their own piece.

5th Class Electives: for Intermediate and Pre-College campers

Musical Theater - Always a camper favorite ! Students participate in a mini-production of a musical complete with ensemble numbers, solos, basic costuming and choreography. They study character development, improvisation and staging along with various acting exercises. Students will have fun and form life-long bonds as they work together at this intensive pace to create their scenes.
